Fire Prevention Deity: Mount Atago and Abandoned Ruins Hiking

Grading:

Mount Atago is a 924-meter mountain located in Kyoto’s Oku-zashiki, historically worshiped alongside Mount Hiei to the east. At its summit stands the main shrine of Atago Shrine, which has approximately 900 branches nationwide and is famous as a guardian deity against fire. The annual "Sennichi Mairi" pilgrimage, held from the night of July 31st to the early morning of August 1st, is believed to offer the equivalent of 1,000 days of fire protection. Every year, tens of thousands of worshippers visit for this event. Interestingly, Mount Atago was once home to Japan’s longest cable car. At its final stop, a luxurious, Showa-era modern hotel once stood. However, due to material requisition during the war, the cable car was decommissioned after only 15 years. Today, moss-covered remnants of the station and hotel remain, attracting enthusiasts of abandoned sites. During the hike, a knowledgeable guide will share historical insights, inviting you to imagine the lively atmosphere of the past. With an elevation gain of over 900 meters and a hiking distance of approximately 10 kilometers, this trail offers a moderate challenge. While the Omotesando trail is relatively well-maintained, the numerous stairs make it ideal for beginners looking to level up their hiking experience. We’ll take frequent breaks, so why not give it a try?
