Mt. Atago Hiking, the "God of Fire Fighting
Mt.Atago is a 924-meter-high mountain located deep in the heart of Kyoto, and has long been the object of religious worship along with Mt. Hiei to the east. At the top of the mountain is the head shrine of Atago Shrine, one of about 900 such shrines in Japan, and is famous as a god of fire prevention and suppression, and is visited by tens of thousands of worshippers each year who make a thousand-day pilgrimage from the night of July 31 to the early morning of August 1 to pray for protection against fire for a thousand days. The elevation difference is over 900 m, and the walking distance is about 9 km. The front path is easy to walk, but there are many stairs, so beginner hikers will have a good chance to improve their skills. We will climb with many breaks, so please give it a try. *If you plan to drive directly to Kiyotaki, please let us know in the remarks column.
