Koyasan is a mountainous basin surrounded by mountains around 1,000m high, called Hachiyou-no-Mine, and until the prohibition of women was lifted in 1872, women were strictly restricted from entering the mountain. In the past, women believers followed the path from the women's hall to the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi Kukai, following the peaks of the Hachiyou lotus flower from one hall to the other.
