Mt. Nijo Hiking: Ascend via the Scenic Oiwa Route
We’ll hike Mt. Nijo, a local favorite and the starting point of the Diamond Trail. Using the dotted Oiwa Route as shown in YAMAP, this hike spans approximately 8 km. While there are some rocky sections, the short distance makes it enjoyable even for beginners. We’ll meet at Taimadera Station, where we’ll visit the popular local wagashi shop, *Chujodo Honpo*, to grab their famous yomogi mochi before starting the hike! The trail takes us past Dairyuji Temple and up the Oiwa Route, offering spectacular views of the Nara Basin from Oiwa. From the summit of Mt. Nijo’s male peak (*Otake*), we’ll cross the ridge known as *Uma-no-se* to the female peak (*Metake*), where there is a restroom for convenience. The female peak’s summit offers sweeping views of the plains of Osaka and Nara. For lunch, enjoy yomogi mochi paired with coffee brewed by your guide. The descent will take us via Iwaya Pass, passing the small peak of Haratake. After the hike, we’ll stop by the roadside station *Futakami Park Taima* to shop for fresh produce, sweets, and other treats before heading to the station.
