Sakura Viewing Hike at Mt. Nijo via Oiwa Route

Grading:

Mt. Nijo is the starting point of the locally beloved Diamond Trail. We'll ascend via the Oiwa Route, marked as a dotted line on YAMAP. The hike covers approximately 8 km with some rocky sections, but the short distance makes it enjoyable even for beginners. We’ll meet at Taimadera Station and start with a visit to Chujodo Hompo, a popular Japanese sweets shop near the station, to purchase their famous yomogi mochi. The hike begins after passing Dairyuji Temple. As we ascend the Oiwa Route, a panoramic view of the Nara Basin awaits at Oiwa. After summiting Mt. Nijo’s Male Peak (Odake), we’ll cross the Uma-no-se ridge to reach the Female Peak (Medake), where restrooms are available. The Female Peak is adorned with cherry trees, offering a stunning view of the Osaka and Nara plains. We’ll enjoy a lunch break with yomogi mochi and coffee brewed by the guide. Our descent will take us through Iwaya Pass and over Mt. Hara. After the hike, we’ll visit the roadside station Futakami Park Taima for shopping—fresh vegetables and sweets are highly recommended. Relax a bit before heading to the station.
