Spring Traverse of Mt. Ponpon
It is the highest peak of the Oinosaka Mountain Range in Kyoto Nishiyama, and its unusual name comes from the “pon-pon” sound that can be heard when stomping on the summit. From the mountaintop, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Osaka Plain and Kyoto. There is also a rest area where you can take a lunch break while enjoying the scenery. The hiking distance is about 10 km, and it is a beginner-friendly traverse route with gentle mountain trails. After descending, we will visit Yoshiminedera Temple. It is the 20th temple of the Saigoku 33 Pilgrimage and a famous temple in Nishiyama. The weeping cherry blossoms in the temple grounds are spectacular, and you can enjoy them along with the view of Kyoto’s cityscape. "Yuryu no Matsu" (a designated natural monument) stretches more than 37 meters sideways and is said to resemble a dragon.
