Wakakusa Mountain & Wisteria at Kasuga Taisha on the New "An'nei" Limited Express Mahoroba

Grading:

The limited express “Mahoroba”, which operates temporarily between Osaka and Nara, will introduce a new train “An’nei” starting in April. The exterior is designed with colors inspired by treasures from the Nara period: "Suou-iro" (a deep red color) and gold, representing the warmth of paradise. The emblem on the train features deer, goldfish, and Yamato vegetables, symbolizing the essence of Nara. The seats inside the train are covered in Suou-iro fabric with a pattern of “Housouge”, an imaginary plant from classical Japanese art. This new limited express “Mahoroba” enhances the travel experience with a distinctly Nara-inspired atmosphere. After arriving at JR Nara Station, we will hike up Mt. Wakakusa, known for the annual Yamayaki Fire Festival. The mountain’s shape resembles three stacked hats, which is why it is also called “Mikasa-yama”. We will enter through the mountain gate and hike through the first, second, and third tiers, each offering different scenic views. The hike from the gate to the summit takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes. At the summit, we will enjoy lunch while admiring the view of Nara, including Todaiji Temple and Kofukuji Temple. Next, we will visit the UNESCO World Heritage site, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, and explore the Kasuga Taisha Manyo Botanical Garden, the oldest botanical garden in Japan dedicated to plants mentioned in Manyoshu poetry. The Wisteria Garden features around 200 wisteria trees of 20 varieties, blooming from mid-April to mid-May. Wisteria is such an important symbol for Kasuga Taisha that it is even used in the shrine’s crest. The total hiking distance is approximately 10 km, making it an easy and beginner-friendly course. This event offers a unique combination of a special train ride, seasonal flowers, and panoramic hiking views.
