World Heritage Koyasan Nyonindo Pilgrimage Hiking
Koyasan is a mountain basin surrounded by peaks of around 1,000 meters, known as the "Eight Petal Peaks." Until the lifting of the ban on women in 1872, strict regulations prevented women from entering Koyasan. Seven pilgrimage routes, collectively called "Koya Nanakuchi," led to Koyasan, and at each entrance, special temples called "Nyonindo" were built for women to pray. Since women were forbidden from entering Koyasan, many made pilgrimages along the "Nyonindo Route," traveling from one Nyonindo to another, longing to pray to Kobo Daishi or to catch a glimpse of their sons training in the monastery. The total hiking distance is about 10 km. We will walk slowly while learning about the history along the way. Those who wish can also visit Okunoin, the most sacred site of Kobo Daishi worship, where his mausoleum is located.
