A Scenic Hike with Scattered Giant Rocks: Mt. Iwagomori and the Indian Prairie

Grading:

Mt. Iwagomori is one of the three famous mountains of Tsuruga, along with Mt. Nosaka and Mt. Nishikatagatake. The summit sits at an elevation of 765.2m. On a clear day, you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, Tsuruga Bay and Tsuruga City to the north, and even Lake Biwa far to the south. To the east of the summit lies a vast field of dwarf bamboo, known as the “Indian Prairie,” where numerous large granite boulders are scattered throughout the gently undulating grassland. This unique landscape offers a surreal and scenic experience. Why not climb the uniquely shaped rock called “Jaws Rock” for a great view? We’ll start the ascent from the Dagu Trailhead. Just before reaching the Indian Prairie, you’ll pass through a beautiful beech forest. After enjoying lunch at the summit, we will descend to the Ichihashi Trailhead, where you’ll encounter a series of waterfalls both large and small. As the trail includes multiple stream crossings, please proceed with care. The total hiking distance is approximately 11 km. The approach to and from the trailheads is about 2 km each way, so the actual mountain trail is roughly 7 km. With an elevation gain of about 720 m and stream crossings included, the mountain difficulty level is rated 6. This is a special Golden Week mini expedition. Let’s explore a mountain area that we don’t usually visit!
