Kyoto Trail Hiking③: Nishiyama Course – From Takao to Kami-Katsura Station

Grading:

Following the Higashiyama Course of the Kyoto Trail, we continue with the Kitayama and Nishiyama sections as a series of events. The final installment, Vol.3, covers the Nishiyama Course. Starting from the Takao bus stop, we will hike along the scenic Kiyotaki River, cross Rokucho Pass, and head toward Arashiyama. Participants who wish to extend the hike can ascend Mt. Matsuo, known for its great views, and finish at Kami-Katsura Station. The total distance is approximately 15 km. This event is ideal for those looking to improve their hiking fitness or prepare for alpine traverses. The full Kyoto Trail spans 84 km, and the Kitayama and Nishiyama sections are divided into three separate events. Participants who complete all three events will receive a special Kansai Hikers completion sticker. This route offers a unique blend of Kyoto’s traditional charm and natural beauty. From the quiet retreat of Takao, we follow a mostly flat trail alongside the emerald-green Kiyotaki River, shaded by rows of Kitayama cedar. After passing through the famous Arashiyama area, those continuing can climb the steep 50-minute ascent to Mt. Matsuo for panoramic views. The trail concludes at Kami-Katsura Station.
