Mt. Odai Bus Tour to Enjoy Meteor Showers and Primeval Forests

Grading:

A plateau-shaped mountain area straddling the border of Nara and Mie prefectures, with Mt. Hinokigatake (1,695m) as its highest peak. Known for having the heaviest rainfall in Japan, the region has nurtured dramatic cliffs like Daijagura, magnificent valleys, and lush virgin forests of spruce and beech, making it a major destination for mountain climbers in the Kansai region. As one of Japan's most remote wilderness areas, far from human settlements, it is also ideal for stargazing. On August 12, 2025, the Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak, streaming across the northeastern sky, while the Milky Way will be visible in full across the southern sky. Our visit on August 10, two days before the peak, will still offer more shooting stars than usual. On the first day, we will hike the popular East Odai course, full of highlights such as Daijagura and Masaki Pass. The plateau is about 10°C cooler than flatlands, allowing us to hike comfortably even in midsummer. Accommodation is at “Shin-Tojikan,” the only lodge on Mt. Odai. We have reserved annex rooms with sinks and toilets. The bath is available, but only body soap is provided. Please bring your own shampoo, conditioner, and bath towel. On the second day, we plan to hike the West Odai course, an area not open to general tourists. Entry is limited to a certain number of people per day to protect the precious virgin forest. Only those whose application (including name, address, and contact information) has been approved can enter. A pre-lecture at the Visitor Center is also required on the previous day or the day of entry.
