Miyoshi-yama and Settsukyo Gorge Hike with Japan’s Largest Haniwa Ritual Site

Grading:

We'll explore Miyoshi-yama and Settsukyo Gorge before visiting the Imashirozuka Kofun Park—home to the largest haniwa ritual site in Japan. Although the walking distance is only about 5 km, the trail is packed with highlights—mountain views, a waterfall, and a scenic stream. We’ll start with a hike up Miyoshi-yama, which offers great views and remnants of Akutagawa Castle from the Sengoku period. A short walk deeper into the valley leads us to the picturesque Shirataki waterfall. From there, we’ll enjoy a pleasant riverside walk through Settsukyo Gorge. After a short bus ride, we’ll stop for lunch at Imashirozuka Kofun Park. Thinking, “It’s just a dirt mound, right?” Think again! This kofun features Japan’s largest haniwa ritual site, with about 190 sculptural haniwa on display. Some are even touchable—perfect for Instagram! Unlike most kofun, this one is open to the public, allowing you to walk inside. And since Kansai Hikers is all about “mountains, valleys, and everything in between,” this time we're trying something new: a guided explanation of the kofun's history. Step back in time and enjoy a uniquely special day!
