10,000 Hydrangea Temple Yatadera and Yata Hills Hiking
Yatadera Temple, located on the slopes of Mt. Yata in the heart of the Yata Hills, is one of the sacred sites where the Jizo Bodhisattva (Ksitigarbha) faith originated. Known for its compassionate nature, the Jizo Bodhisattva is said to appear in various forms to guide and save sentient beings, even standing by our side during the judgment of King Enma in the afterlife. Around 10,000 hydrangeas of approximately 60 varieties, planted in honor of this beloved deity, burst into full bloom across the temple grounds during the rainy season. This breathtaking display has earned Yatadera the nickname "Hydrangea Temple," drawing visitors from across Japan and around the world each year. The hike covers approximately 12 km along the gently undulating Yata Hills, offering scenic viewpoints and historical sites like the Yamatomatsuo-ji Temple, known as the oldest sanctuary for warding off evil in Japan. Lunch can be brought from home, or you can choose to dine at one of the temple lodges offering seasonal curries or traditional Buddhist cuisine.
