Stream Crossings and Rocky Variation Route: Mt. Nishi-Tatsuga Rock Hike
Near Mt. Iwawaki, we’ll cross thrilling streams one after another and climb the towering Tatsuga Rock using ropes. This is a variation route not marked on YAMAP and other maps—why not enjoy this adventurous course? Even in summer, the narrow trail along the river stays cool. Though the path is unclear, we will keep moving forward while repeatedly crossing the stream. After viewing the impressive Nunobiki Waterfall, we will climb up the steep slope next to the falls. Once the riverside trail ends, we can take a short break. To reach Nishi-Tatsuga Rock, we’ll first climb Kame Rock using ropes. There are many footholds, so it’s manageable if you proceed carefully. From Kame Rock, the view opens up and a breeze flows through. After crossing another rocky section with a rope, we will see Nishi-Tatsuga Rock, a sharply pointed rock that towers overhead. After enjoying lunch at a scenic viewpoint, we’ll descend past Mt. Amigasa to Iwawakiji Temple. If time permits, we’ll make a short detour to Minami-Tatsuga Rock (about 20 minutes round trip). From Iwawakiji Temple, we’ll walk about 5km on paved roads toward Taki-hata Dam, then take a bus back to Kawachinagano Station. *Note: There are no toilets along the trail, so please use the restroom at Kawachinagano Station beforehand. *Note: Because there is plenty of water, there is a chance of stepping into the stream. Bringing a spare pair of socks is recommended.
